NEWS & IMAGES FROM ELLENSBURG:

Late News

People need to LET ME (Nancy) KNOW if they are coming on the tour!!

Subject: Perhaps something more for anyone coming in on Friday ?

I don't know that it warrants putting on the web page but then again .
. . perhaps.. washingtongeographers.org

I do know those who are coming for the 1:00 / 2:00 Wind Farm Tour and I
can send this to them ! The 1:00 is for
our GTU ceremony and sandwiches. I invited all who were coming to the
Wind Farm Tour to join us at 1:00, if possible.

We were also thinking (Chip and I and Gina) of having an
after-the-Wind-Farm-Tour Social and inviting some of our REM (graduate)
students to The TAV-- not sure when we will start this, but perhaps at
5:00 or 5:30 p.m. Friday night their specialty
is prime rib. Bob Kuhlken is planning to come on the Wind Farm trip,
as is my hubby John, but Gina cannot make it
because of a class.

THEN .. this announcement just came in.. and might be of interest for a
few folks. Even if someone is going to the
Wine Odyssey (and I'm not aware anyone is), then there would still be
time for this, even if you do the wine odyssey.
The price is not bad. A visit to the new music building to enjoy the
acoustics of the Concert hall is worth it.

Nancy King and Steve Christofferson combine with CWU Jazz Groups

The extraordinary jazz vocalist Nancy King and her equally talented
pianist, Steve Christofferson, will appear with the CWU Vocal Jazz I and
Jazz Band I on May 16th, 8pm, at the CWU Music Building. A singer that
The Oregonian says has “ the instincts of a true jazz improviser”; Nancy
King is considered by many to be one of the few great jazz singers still
alive. Karrin Allyson, who recently headlined at the Seasons Performance
Hall in Yakima, calls her “one of the best singers that ever walked the
planet.” The great bassist Ray Brown featured her on his 1998 CD “Some
of My Best Friends Are Singers” followed by a European tour in ’99.

Nancy has worked steadily with pianist Steve Christofferson since 1978,
appearing in venues as diverse as festivals in Bulgaria, France, Canada
and throughout the United States. The Canadian Broadcast Corporation
(CBC) commissioned a number of recordings of the duo which were compiled
in a 2000 release on Stellar Records titled “Dream Lands” which has
received extensive airplay, including a feature on the Jazz Riffs
Sampler played on NPR stations throughout the US. The sequel to this
successful album was released in 2002 followed by a multi-date tour to
Israel, which included performances with a 45-piece orchestra. This year
Steve and Nancy have continued their busy schedule with performances in
Australia, New York and California.

The CWU Jazz Studies Area is proud to present these fine performers on a
concert which will showcase the duo, followed by combinations of Steve
and Nancy with the Vocal Jazz I, directed by Vijay Singh, and the Jazz
Band I, directed by Chris Bruya. “We have been trying for a number of
years to get these guys up here for an event. Finally our schedules
lined up and we are ecstatic about the opportunities to perform with and
present these musicians to the community,” says Bruya. In addition, King
and Christofferson will present clinics at Ellensburg High School (7am,
May 15) and Central Washington University (1pm, May 16), which are open
to all. Support by the Jazz In The Valley Education Fund and the CWU
Jazz Fund makes the duo’s visit possible.

Tickets for the concert will be sold at the door, $5 general admission,
$3 students and seniors. The concert will start at 8pm in order to
accommodate other events in the Music Department on May 16th.
